Upon my arrival in Bermondsey, I <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">found<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a crowd of people, their focus not on the gallery<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s entrance<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> but rather on the beer taps and the tent where the grill was set up. (The Painter in His Bed, etc.), 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The exhibition<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, titled<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<em><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">A Confession of My Sins<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> showcases<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the recent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> works <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the 86-year-old Baselitz<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, who<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">has <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">revisited the imprints and visions of his youth alongside motifs central to his artistic <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">career<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">After all, an artist always deals with his past,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a sage of the art world once proclaimed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">perhaps Baselitz himself. The gallery<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">first space <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">blooms with an array of large<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">-scale<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> canvases, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">each bearing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> his <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">signature upside-down figures<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">now set against a backdrop<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">buoyant <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">sky<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. His paintings have always been diverse in style and execution, but the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ones <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">displayed at White Cube, with their erratic figural outlines<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a medley of<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">artifacts and aggressive paint<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">application<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, seem <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">stand as a testament to Baselitz<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s belief in the primacy of visual perception<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">elevating it above <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">subject<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, detail, and form. The neo-expressionist approach, with its roots in informal, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">brut<span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">art, proves to be an apt conduit for these embryonic concepts. The large-scale paintings rhyme with the displayed drawings,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">where red and black coalesce into distorted, discordant shapes. To pass the time, a neighbor engaged a passerby<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">H<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ave you been inside?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Is it nice<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> As I held my place, the wait culminated not in the expected drink but in the unexpected arrival of Baselitz himself, who was promptly served a glass out of turn. Such a notion was challenging to accept, especially as names like Koons, Gursky, and Baselitz failed to impress him. My skepticism still strong as the White Cube gallery presents an impressive collection of Georg Baselitz\u2019s new creations, following the retrospectives of Marina Abramovich at the British Museum and Yoko Ono at Tate Modern.
