Yesterday, during his visit to Poland, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak outlined a comprehensive strategy that includes strengthening the arms industry and allocating significant funds to support Ukraine. According to the prime minister&#8217;s statement, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> spending will increase to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a3<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">87 billion per year by 2030. Today, Sunak&#8217;s proposals have already been supported in Germany, where he arrived for a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In particular, joint initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing military potential were discussed during the visit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The prime minister&#8217;s statement was in response to growing pressure from the Conservative Party, where prominent figures such as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Minister Grant Shapps and Security Minister <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-68522402\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Tom Tugendhat<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> have advocated for increased military spending to effectively counter threats. Sunak&#8217;s commitment to allocate no less than <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a3<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">3 billion per year to Ukraine <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for as long as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">required<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">combined with an increase in the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> budget, was announced three days after it became known that the US House of Representatives <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/4\/21\/us-house-passes-almost-100-billion-in-aid-for-ukraine-israel-what\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">approved<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a $61 billion aid package to Ukraine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-announces-turning-point-in-european-security-as-uk-set-to-increase-defence-spending-to-25-by-2030\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Central<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to Sunak&#8217;s plans is the development of the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">industry, which he intends to put on &#8220;military rails.&#8221; A significant portion of the funding (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a3<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">10 billion) will be directed towards ammunition production. Despite such decisive measures, Sunak hastened to reassure voters, stating that the UK is not on the brink of war and is not seeking conflict.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Critics, however, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2024\/apr\/23\/uk-to-boost-defence-spending-to-25-of-gdp-sunak-says?utm_term=6628a10f70d9f07dbb8fa45398b93e7f&amp;utm_campaign=FirstEdition&amp;utm_source=esp&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;CMP=firstedition_email\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">doubt<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the feasibility of the plan, especially regarding its sources of funding. Independent forecasts indicate that the necessary funds will partly come from cutting 70,000 civil service positions and will be directed towards increasing investments in relevant military research and development. Thus, the strategy entails expanding <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> spending without increasing the country&#8217;s debt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Sunak also <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/uk-to-increase-defence-spending-to-2-5-of-gdp-meaning-tens-of-billions-of-pounds-of-extra-funding-13121450\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">noted<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> that global tensions have reached Cold War levels. Therefore, increasing military spending is not just a necessity but, according to the prime minister, a strategic response to challenges in maintaining global stability. He <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">emphasised<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the UK&#8217;s key role as the second-largest NATO member after the US and called on allies to meet their collective <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> commitments. <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/nato_static_fl2014\/assets\/pdf\/2023\/7\/pdf\/230707-def-exp-2023-en.pdf#page=3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Currently<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, military spending of more than half of NATO member countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, and others, is less than the required 2%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">However, the future of the ambitious UK <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> program remains uncertain. While the Labour Party has expressed readiness to meet Sunak&#8217;s military commitments, they have not provided final guarantees. Earlier, Labour leader Keir Starmer spoke of directing up to 2.5% of GDP to these goals only if &#8220;resources allow.&#8221; Additionally, Labour&#8217;s shadow <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">minister, John Healey, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a6f7fcb6-5580-4fa7-b16b-f7fc8bc650e4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">stated<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the Tories have shown time and time again that they cannot be trusted on defence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">It should be noted that ahead of elections, new government initiatives coordinated at the international level appear more than serious.
