It invites spectators to encounter characters who seem to have leaped from the novel<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s pages: oprichniks reveling in their spoils, writhing from their relentless pursuits, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">bonding in the steam of the bathhouse<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a ritual of <span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">corporate spirit.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> These portrayals are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rendered<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">literally<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> from one narrative structure to another<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in the canon of any available text-to-image tools like DALL-E or Midjourney. The artworks,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> g<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lossy and profane, are all<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">too much; the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ir<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> contrast is turned up to the limit in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">scenes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> where a traditional artist might have opted for restraint or woven a subtler allegory, thus granting the class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of Sorokin<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s authentic graphics, harking back to the Moscow conceptualist movement, particularly to Prigov: simple silhouettes composed of handwritten text, with words <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">like <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">oprichnina<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> or <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">oprichnik<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">bisecting the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">paper <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">into right<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em\"><span This somewhat<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">mirrors Sorokin<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s own creative ethos, where pushing boundaries<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">extremes serve<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to numb emotional response<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">much like <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the waning impact of gore after a horror movie marathon. <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The Day of the Oprichnik<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> exhibition introduces material relationships to abstract categories of fantasy, remaining a concentrate of the somber, a distorted mirror of reality, a nightmare that leaves one waking in a cold sweat.
