It was during <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> transatlantic flight that he conceived <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Line Describing a Cone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">(1973), the first <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">of his<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">solid light<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> installations. In <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Line Describing a Cone,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a point is projected onto a surface, tracing an arc<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">that gradually forms a circle<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in a 35-minute progression<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> The protagonists of this minimalist drama (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">would<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the circle close? would the point&#8217;s final position align with its start?) <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">were<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> both the figure on the wall and the projector beam&#8217;s cone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Legend has it that a pivotal moment occurred during a showing of &#8220;Line Describing a Cone&#8221; at the Swedish Konsthallen gallery. His resurgence was marked <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">by <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a series of high-profile solo exhibitions at prestigious venues: the Centre Pompidou and Tate in 2004, the Museum f<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00fc<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">r Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt in 2005, and the Serpentine Gallery in 2007<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> This renewed interest continues<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unabated, with &#8220;Solid Light&#8221; currently on display at Tate until April.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In Tate&#8217;s dimmed exhibition <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hall<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, light<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">assumes a sculptural presence, transmuting space and generating open abstract forms with edges evocative<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> gossamer lace. Spectators find themselves simultaneously drawn to and apprehensive of these ethereal luminous shafts. The hybridity of the viewer&#8217;s experience manifests in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">multiple modes of visual engagement: one might become a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">n <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">inadvertent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">modifier of the installation, an unstable component within<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">its structure, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or its<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">protagonist. Observers might witness others interact, creating shadow plays and layered effects, wander around, or seek refuge in the shadowy interstices between projections.
