The nine-day intervention, when viewed holistically, presents a narrative arc culminating <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">its<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">final<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> fragment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Why<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> does the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">gorilla help <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the zoo <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">animals escape, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">who<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> then<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">disperse throughout the city<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Those pondering this question <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">should<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">revisit the &#8220;Madagascar&#8221; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">cartoon<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> for insight into why animals yearn to leave cages and enclosures, and what comes of it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Perhaps the most intriguing aspect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of Banksy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s action <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lies not in the works themselves, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">but <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the recurring spectacle<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> where<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the white-masked<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">figure<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> emerg<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">es<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> streets under the cover of darkness, complete with spray cans and a compact <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">cherry picker<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. In portraying characters from his <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">paradoxical<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> urban comic, Banksy seems to embody one of its protagonists<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a &#8220;barely legal<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">marginalized<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">voice <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">from<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the masses. To fully match the image, he requires an antagonist, a bearer of opposing values. Hence the $V tag on the Charlton rhino<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">serves as the signature<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the South Vandals group<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the &#8220;true graffiti <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">formalists.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">B<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">anksy&#8217;s art<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> stand<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> on its own, independent of its author<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">another parallel to the world of comics. We may never uncover Banksy&#8217;s real identity or glimpse their face<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">perhaps they lack one altogether<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> It&#8217;s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">also <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">possible that in 10 or even 100 years, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">monochromatic<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> stencils will continue<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">appear on London&#8217;s streets<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> night, provoking attempts at appropriation or destruction, leaving media persist<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in their<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">speculat<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ion<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">: &#8220;What did Banksy mean this time?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For nine consecutive nights, the streets of London, each time in a new location, were graced with animal-themed graffiti by Banksy, the mega-star of modern art.
