For them, art is a method of survival, and survival is an art. The inherent romanticism of their being, tinged with melancholy, prevents them from completely losing touch with reality: when Rodolfo accidentally encounters Mimi <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">at<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the threshold of his squalid apartment-cum-studio, he realizes that the world can no longer offer him anything more grand.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The commune of artist-ascetics leads a semi-impoverished existence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> oscillating between moments of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">thoughtfulness<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and bouts of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">enlightenment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, subsisting on potatoes and wine<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">This precarious balance <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">seems<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> disrupted when<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Marcel is offered the position of editor-in-chief <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">at<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the new women&#8217;s magazine &#8220;Iris Belt.&#8221; Flush with a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">paycheque<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, the first order of business is, of course, to visit a restaurant-cabaret, and the next day, with renewed energy, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">enter a regime of strict economy.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32819\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871.jpeg\" data-lbwps-width=\"1280\" data-lbwps-height=\"858\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871-600x402.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32819 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871-600x402.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871-902x605.jpeg 902w, https:\/\/londoncult.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/img_4871-709x475.jpeg 709w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still from \u201cThe Bohemian Life&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"s3\">\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Fortuna, capriciously commanding the servants of the muses, soon inflicts the first serious trial: Rodolfo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">defenceless<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> before the law,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">deported back to his native Albania. As<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Baudelaire, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">his<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> forsaken dog, is taken <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Marcel and Schaunard, Mimi leaves for a wealthy admirer, the owner of a &#8220;normal&#8221; four-wheeled car (our heroes possess an &#8220;abnormal&#8221; three-wheeler). Yet<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, so be it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">: women come and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">go<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, money appears and vanishes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">friendship endure<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, and the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">artists<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> will continue to live from one stroke of luck to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the next<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Let<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s smile once more, and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Rodolfo, smuggled back to France in the trunk of a compact car, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">will be reunited with Mimi, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for an artistic life on the verge of poverty alongside a stoic artist with a Maxim Gorky-style <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">moustache<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">better than<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> vapid comforts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In the film, everything is so unstable, so fragile<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and fickle<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, that the secondary role of the sugar <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">tycoon<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is played by Jean-Pierre L<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00e9<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">aud, the &#8220;golden child&#8221; of the French New Wave, who has worked with Godard, Truffaut, and Kaurism<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00e4<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ki himself. It is he, the messenger of Fortuna, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">who <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">decides to become a patron<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">saving <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Rodolfo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> from seemingly hopeless situations<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">thrice<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">over. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">As an old-fashioned deity, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Kaurism<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00e4<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ki delights in subjecting his <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">protagonists<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> hardships, only intervening when they, &#8220;having hungered,&#8221; are ready to despair completely. T<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">his black<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">white is the first step into<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> world of borderline contrasts: <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">bohemian <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Paris <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">can <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">be mundane and dreary, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">yet <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it is only there that one can join the brotherhood of the oppressed, find love, and perhaps <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">achieve<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a semblance of success<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Such a black-and-white cake, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">layered<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> despair and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">faint<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> glimmers of hope, is meant to be savored with tears in one&#8217;s eyes, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">smile<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> on one&#8217;s lips, and occasional laughter in the face of Fortuna.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the heart of bohemian Paris, Irishman Schaunard composes a symphony titled &#8220;The Influence of Blue on Art,&#8221; Albanian Rodolfo finishes a painting in the art na\u00eff style (for which he will earn one-tenth of what he spent on paints), and French playwright Marcel harangues publishers with his 21-act epic.
