One fateful<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">evening, in true giallo fashion, he claims a victim. Simultaneously<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and rather fortunately<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, Diana (Ilenia Pastorelli)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">having just declined a client<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s request for fisting<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">gets into her car on <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">nearby<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> street. The ensuing chase through Rome<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s desolate streets culminates in a crash, leaving Diana blind due to a hemorrhage in her brain<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s Brodmann area (among other <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">perverted<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> interests, Argento <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">has <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">always had a penchant for <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">medical<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> term<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">inology<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">). Under<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ese <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">new<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">conditions, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it is not so much Diana looking after Chin<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the boy assuming a mentor-like role: <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">My sister <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in Hong Kong <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">did the same <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">thing<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">as you, she always had lots of money and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">la pistola<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Consequently, th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ere remains<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">little<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">room for the maniac<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or occult justifications for violence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the murders are reduced to a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">set<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of happenstances tinged with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">luck<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Yet e<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ven so, the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">police<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> remain powerless, they<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> can only<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> shake their heads<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in disbelief,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">document the atrocities, and leave to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">wait the next victim.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0 class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Argento was <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">critisized<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of excessive melodrama,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">dulling <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">giallo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> tools, a dearth of moral depth in conception, and glaring plot holes. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">C<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ritic<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">worth their salt<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">attributed <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">these flaws<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the director<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s advancing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">years<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. However<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the real issue with devaluing artistic decisions based on the author&#8217;s age <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lies not in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">its frequent irrelevance<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> but in the absence of an equivalent biographical scrutiny of the critics themselves. Sophisticated dramaturgy and meticulous psychological portraits were never<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> forte<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of Argento<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">an independent<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> eccentric auteur who follows the discordant rhythms of logic<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s dark underbelly.
