sociopolitical turmoil of the country in which it exists<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a nation plagued with paranoi<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, violence, and injustice. Najmeh, Iman&#8217;s wife, strives to maintain domestic life, preserving rather than nurturing traditional ways. But for whom? Who among the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">familiar faces has become the catalyst for rebellion, driving the film into thriller territory with interrogations, chases, and raw domestic violence? Rasoulof created it <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in secret<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, violating censorship during a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">brief <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">two-month window between his release from prison<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">where he served time for his previous work<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">another <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">impending <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">trial<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">His<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">refusal to withdraw the film from Cannes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">competition triggered the regime<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s full wrath: an eight-year sentence, property<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">confiscation, and public flogging. Yet, with forged papers, Rasoulof managed to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">escape<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the country<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">his film and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ct<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">resistance earned him a fifteen-minute standing ovation at the Cannes premiere<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I have never witnessed an audience applaud repeatedly during a screening,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Rasoulof reflected<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">having appeared<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">on the red carpet carrying photographs of Missa Zareh and Soheila Golestani<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">actors forbidden from leaving Iran. Children there share the same fundamental need for parental love and understanding.
