Four years later, Emilia P<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00e9<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rez, now a vibrant matron with plump lips, a dazzling smile, clad in YSL, encounters <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">established<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Rita in an upscale London restaurant<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a meeting that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the latter<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">intuitively senses is no mere coincidence. Yet<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">his<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> latest endeavor, there isn<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">t a single hit (the most memorable <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">act is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Rita<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s performance at <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">fundraising dinner<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Emilia Perez<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> foundation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">), <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unlike the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">work of fellow Frenchman Leos Carax<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Annette.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Audiard attempts to infuse the narrative with melodrama, passion, love, and identity crisis, but the scope of the story is so vast that the viewer barely has time to delve in<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the inner world of any of the characters<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Time itself careens recklessly through the film<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">preventing the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">narrative <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">from transcending the realm of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">superficial sensationalism.
