It\u2019s the story of <em>Marina 2.0<\/em>, who went on to win bronze at the Para-Cycling World Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>m five years old now\u201d \u2014 and a body that no longer belongs to you<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina speaks about her injury without pathos or bitterness \u2014 as if it were simply a fact of life. The medical diagnosis was concise: a <em>high spinal cord injury<\/em>. Because of the tracheostomy tube in her neck, she had to learn to breathe, speak, move her hands, and write all over again. \u201cI was like a little child,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s why I call myself Marina 2.0. Technically, I\u2019m five years old now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hardest part, she admits, isn\u2019t pain or immobility, but the loss of control over her own body. \u201cYour body doesn\u2019t belong to you anymore. It lives its own life. It might want to use the toilet \u2014 or not. You can\u2019t plan what will happen to you even five minutes ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unpredictability makes daily life fragile. Simple things \u2014 a shower, coffee with friends, a short trip \u2014 turn into logistical operations involving phone calls, checks, and coordination. What once took thirty minutes can now consume an entire day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Not rehabilitation \u2014 <\/strong><strong>adaptation<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina dislikes the word <em>rehabilitation<\/em>. \u201cIt implies returning to what you were before. But what if that version of you no longer exists?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she speaks of <em>adaptation<\/em>. \u201cIf your leg has been amputated, you can\u2019t go back to your old paradigm \u2014 but you can find new functions. It\u2019s not recovery; it\u2019s reconstruction. It\u2019s a reconfigured everyday life, a new system of coordinates, new relationships with time and with people. To be dependent \u2014 and still be independent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>When every morning is a project<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina\u2019s daily life runs with mathematical precision. \u201cThe toilet doesn\u2019t take two minutes \u2014 it takes twenty. Multiply that, and you\u2019ve got two and a half hours a day just for that. She used to be able to wake up on a Saturday, buy a ticket, and fly somewhere <em>just because she felt like it<\/em>. Now even a simple caf\u00e9 visit demands calculation: assistant, transport, accessible toilet, ramp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019ve learned to choose myself,\u201d Marina says. \u201cIf I\u2019m tired, I say no. I take a day and just sleep. That\u2019s a new skill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Three jobs and a <\/strong><strong>\u00a3<\/strong><strong>16,000 bike<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After the injury, Marina didn\u2019t cut back on work \u2014 she doubled down. Those figures are worth remembering when people debate \u201cbenefits\u201d and \u201csocial support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laughing, Marina calls her bike \u201ca \u0160koda among Ferraris \u2014 but it goes, and that\u2019s what matters.\u201d (Worth noting: she\u2019s a <em>World Championship bronze medalist<\/em>&nbsp;in para-cycling.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>A story about a single step<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen people ask whether sport in Britain is accessible to people with disabilities, I have a story,\u201d Marina says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once, she signed up at a local gym \u2014 but couldn\u2019t get inside. There was a step at the entrance and no ramp. But that\u2019s just one gym.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s those small things \u2014 steps, broken lifts, lack of toilets \u2014 that create systemic barriers excluding disabled people from entire areas of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Marina won a <em>Churchill Fellowship<\/em>, a grant to travel to Australia, the U.S., and Canada to study inclusivity in sport. Afterward, she plans to work with <em>UK Active<\/em>, the regulatory body for British gyms, to develop accessibility guidelines \u2014 so that inclusion becomes the norm, not a battle fought \u201cone step at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><em><strong><em>Superhuman<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><strong>, Team GB, and the right to be ordinary<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>British media often call disabled athletes <em>superhumans<\/em>. Marina finds the term grating. \u201cI\u2019m glad if I inspire someone,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I\u2019m not a superhuman. I\u2019m just a person who drinks coffee, buys flowers, and goes out for milk. That can be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her view is simple: \u201cWhy should every disabled person have to be a Paralympian? Not every non-disabled person is an Olympian. It\u2019s about life that continues \u2014 even when everything changes: body, rhythm, rules, the world itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marina doesn\u2019t try to look strong, nor does she pretend to be weak.
