Heathers: The award winning musical, coming to an end
Hold your breath and count the days – fear not, Heathers will be coming to New York in 2025! All of us fans can’t wait to meet the new cast! While we wait for the cast list to be announced, let me introduce you and share some fun facts about the show!
Heathers is originally a dark comedy film released in 1989 that follows a high school girl named Veronica Sawyer, played by Winona Ryder, who navigates the social hierarchy of her school dominated by a clique of popular girls all named Heather. The film takes a dark turn when Veronica falls for the new student, J.D., played by Christian Slater, who has a rebellious and dangerous streak. Together, they plot to eliminate the Heathers, leading to a series of shocking and deadly events. The film explores themes of teenage angst, bullying, and the consequences of violence, all wrapped in a satirical tone.
Heathers was turned into a musical in 2010 by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe. The musical retains the dark humour and themes of the original film, while incorporating twist and an engaging core.
The story follows Veronica Sawyer as she confronts the complexities of high school life, including the pressures of popularity and the dark side of teen relationships. The musical features a mix of upbeat songs and poignant ballads, highlighting the teenagers’ struggles and emotions.
Key characters include Veronica, J.D., and the three Heathers: Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Heather McNamara. The musical addresses themes such as bullying, mental health, and identity, making it relevant to modern audiences.
