ADL Collective
17 July – 23 July 2024
J/M Gallery and Artful Dodger London Productions invite you to step into a world of childhood memories, filled with nursery rhymes and stories that capture fleeting moments from the past, allowing us to relive our fantasies and confront our deepest fears.
Counting Magpies and Childhood Superstitions
Counting magpies is a superstition passed down through generations, ingrained in us through the rhythmic language learned in childhood. It is a reminder of the delicate balance between innocence and the mysteries of the natural world, where a bird can hold the power of a king. The phrase “One magpie for sorrow” echoes in our minds, a spell only broken by acknowledging the power of the bird king, the flock of crows, or the entire animal kingdom that graciously allows us to navigate this world safely.
A Journey Back to Childhood
The exhibition evokes the return to childhood, where the magical power of knowing eyes watch us intently. It brings to life the cat in her cradle flexing her claws, the watchful eye from the hedgerow shadows, the shallows of the sea, and the mysteries lying beneath the foaming waves. There is a sense of understanding on the face of a pet dog as we share our secret stories with them, encapsulating the essence of childhood wonder and imagination.
A New Facet of Human Experience
This latest installment by ADL at J/M Gallery, like each of their exhibitions, explores and unravels a new facet of the human experience on Earth. Artful Dodger London Productions, curated by the talented PJ Woolfall, brings together community-based artist collectives. This time, the Week 45 Artist Collective responds to the theme “Seven For a Secret,” with each piece whispering tales of hidden truths and untold stories.
